There are many reasons for the outstanding success of the First XI this season but undoubtedly a key factor was the consistency and brilliance of paceman Joe Riddell.

A stalwart of the side for many years, Joe took his entire game to new heights in 2026 recording a staggering 50 league wickets.

Arguably one of the unluckiest bowlers to grace Marigolds, Joe appeared to repeatedly beat the bat in previous seasons without ever getting his just rewards. All that changed in this campaign as he added a yard of pace and accuracy coupled with a devastating slower ball.

The bowling records have tumbled as Joe placed himself up there with some of the greatest to ever represent the club.

His 8-58 away at Stanford Le Hope was the third best ever performance in Harlow First XI history behind legends Fred Silcock (8-5 in 1959) and Ray Day (8-43 in 1975).

His haul of 50 wickets in a league season is the fifth best for the First XI ever and the most wickets taken by a seamer since the great Terry Smith in 1988.

Across every division at every level of the Essex Senior League only one other bowler took more wickets this season and Joe’s return was the best across all First XI cricket at this level in the county. Given the draught like conditions that were more conducive to spin than seam this represents a stunning achievement.

As if the bowling wasn’t enough Joe has had his best ever season with the bat. At key times, with the side struggling in games, Joe led the lower order with crucial runs. He was instrumental in securing a semi final victory against Frenford in the cup alongside other resilient knocks.

Finally, the 25 point victory away at Newham was so vital to Harlow’s promotion campaign. It was won in the last over when Joe deceived their last man with his slower ball. Perhaps that moment wouldn’t have been possible without his unbelievable boundary catch earlier in the day to break a vital Newham partnership involving their best batsmen.
