On behalf of all those whom played for the club prior to Play Cricket in 2010 I need to preface this article with an acknowledgement that our club records will never be full and accurate. Sadly, only a relatively small percentage of score books have survived the passage of time.
However, we must start somewhere and I've been through every record we hold to make them as accurate as possible. Over the years (our earliest book goes back to the late 1940's) its clear that batting scores have gradually increased. Until the late 1990's 150 was a winning score most weeks whereas now that would be considered a low total. There can be little doubt that the likes of Simon Baulcomb and Lew Whitby would top our all time run scoring records by a distance. Even minus 30 odd years of batting Simon places in 4th on the records we have. With the ball I suspect any number of former players would top the charts from Ray Day, to Mike Burdekin, to Cliff Clark to Steve Peachey.
On the subject of Steve I have it on good authority that he once took 9-23 which would just by the smallest of margins be our all time best match stats but until I can find that record in book or newspaper article we will go with Lewis Aldred's 9-24 but I'll keep searching to try and verify the situation.
It is what it is and over time the records will become increasingly valuable.
All that said 2021 season didn't see much change to the club records. In terms of total career runs Asad Baig broke into the top 10 at the expense of Ken Aldred whilst Callum Sykes did likewise in the bowling. Amir Farooq, 35 wickets, leapt up to 2nd place and closed the gap on all time wicket taker, Sunni Ali.
Sarfaraz Ahmed double '7 for' in the First XI both placed highly in the all time 1st XI match aggregate table and Waheed Azam's 7-17 (2nd XI) got him a place in the all time club performances with Thomas Smith-Hughes (7-21) just outside the Top 10.
Ben Yeats (840 league runs in 2021) was the 5th highest ever recorded at the club in any side. Only two players in history, Ahmed Khawaja (Twice) and Nilesh Odedra have ever scored more First XI league runs in a season. Jack Sykes (5th XI) the only other player to have recorded more runs in a single season.
Callum Sykes and Sarfaraz both entered the top 10 First XI wicket takers on record. Luke Heskett took a First XI wicket that drew him level with Nicky Baxter as the all time First XI leading wicket taker.
Finally, Rob Petchey's incredible 149* at Southend on the day the 2nd XI clinched the league title makes it into the all time top innings for the club as does a 2016 155 by Jon Allen who is another who would surely place towards the top of the run scoring rankings had Play Cricket been a thing when he first played for the club. All the Club Records can be found on the website by following INFORMATION and then CLUB RECORDS with the various disciplines separated accordingly.
