5th XI battle hard in the heat but suffer first defeat of the season
The 5th XI’s unbeaten start to the season came to an end as they fell to a 114-run defeat against Bishop’s Stortford CC 1825’s in challenging conditions.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, Bishop’s Stortford posted an imposing 280-7 from their 40 overs. Despite disciplined spells and some good moments in the field, the visitors’ batters were able to build partnerships and put pressure on the 5’s attack.
The 5th XI responded positively in the chase, showing plenty of fight and determination in the extreme heat. P Fuller top-scored with a well-made 49, while contributions came from M Shaikh (25), Z Ali (20) and J Sykes (18). However, regular wickets prevented any sustained momentum and the innings closed on 166 all out from 32.5 overs.
There were still plenty of positives to take away, with players showing resilience, competing throughout, and continuing to develop as a side. The effort in difficult conditions was a credit to everyone involved.
A first defeat of the campaign, but with a long season ahead and plenty of cricket still to be played, the 5th XI will look to bounce back strongly next week.
