It is with great pride and enthusiasm that we celebrate a remarkable milestone in the career of one of our club’s players: Paddy Matthews has reached the outstanding achievement of 100 league wickets.

Paddy is, by all accounts, an exemplary figure both on and off the pitch. A quiet young man, he lets his actions speak volumes—his politeness, friendliness, and humour have made him a much-admired presence within the club. Over his lengthy service, Paddy has become a true stalwart, the kind of player who embodies loyalty, humility, and commitment.

Paddy’s versatility and willingness to serve in any capacity are legendary. Whether opening the bowling or stepping in for a lower XI, he gives his all, performing every role with a sense of purpose and dedication that sets him apart. He is always willing to play for any team he’s selected for, never shying away from a challenge and always putting the club’s needs above his own.

As a bowler, Paddy is nothing short of a demon. His nagging line and length, coupled with a decent turn of pace, make him a constant menace to opposing batsmen. What truly sets him apart, though, is his mastery of swing—an immense amount, always delivered with absolute control. He is the model of economy, consistently keeping the run rate in check, and is known for his ability to bowl with unwavering accuracy and composure.

Yet, Paddy’s talent does not end with the ball. As a batsman, he is the pillar of reliability. Paddy is equally adept at accelerating the scoring or digging in to steady the ship when needed. His adaptability and calm under pressure have rescued his side on more than one occasion, making him an invaluable asset in all facets of the game.

We asked Paddy to give us an insight into his cricketing career...

When did you first play cricket?
I first played cricket at school in year 4 or 5 regularly going to Kwik Cricket events against other school locally and in Essex.

What got you into cricket? Any inspiring cricketers you base yourself on?
⁠My friends in primary school all started playing it and I started to join in and found a love for it very quickly. I would say I base myself on Chris Woakes, hitting a line and length consistently and can hold the bat and make runs if needed.

How long have you player for Harlow CC?
I have played for Harlow CC for just over 11yrs, starting in the May of 2014.

What is your most memorable cricketing moment?
.My most memorable cricketing moment is watching England win the ODI World Cup while all packed into the Chelmsford CC clubhouse after playing an U16's game all afternoon.

What is your most memorable cricketing moment for Harlow CC?
⁠My most memorable moment for Harlow CC was probably taking my first wicket for the 5th XI as to this day it still might be one of the best balls I've ever bowled!

Any other major events/achievements/proud moments whilst at Harlow CC?
Other events/achievements I'm proud of is beating Matching Green in the indoor league over the winter a couple years in a row. And recently being given the responsibility to bowl the final over against Hutton where they needed 7 runs to win and coming out on top.
