Lewis Takes Nine in a Game and Sunni Leads Overall

Following on from the previous article on batting records at the club here is Part 2 of 3 focusing upon the bowlers. It’s probably worth re-emphasising that Play Cricket records are only as good as the information input onto the system. I’ve had a couple of observations regarding batting records and its worth repeating that the Colts records on there are incomplete and pretty much only cover the County run competitions and some of the West Essex cup fixtures. Equally, the records of the 5th XI in the HECL are not a complete record, there being no requirement in that league to utilise Play Cricket. I do have confidence in the Essex Senior League (Shepherd Neame) data as every single game is required to be fully uploaded onto the system each weekend. For older members, there is to be a review of some of the scorebooks in existence at the club and records will be amended as appropriate in future months.

Anyway, enough of the disclaimer and more of the bowling. The idea was to generate interest amongst those who play and watch cricket at the club and to acknowledge and recount superb performances in the past decade and a bit.

In doing this piece of research I found myself coming across the incredible scorecard relating to Nathan Khelawon’s record breaking Colts performance at Saffron Walden in a West Essex cup fixture. It brought back memories of watching our previously unbeaten U11 side getting skittled out for 53 on an artificial wicket and how there were some rather overexuberant opposition celebrations between players and parents at the mid innings break. As it turned out that score of 53 was the equivalent of about 400 on a decent track as Nathan and Myles Baldock proceeded to dismiss SWCC for 6 (yes SIX!) in a mere 5 overs. It certainly brought a smile recounting that and other occasions I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing. In essence, that’s the real purpose of the records. Hopefully Lewis Aldred, and those who were lucky enough to be his teammates, when he became the only player at the club on record to take 9 wickets in an innings will have a similar reaction and so on. Likewise, the next time you bump into the unassuming Sunni Ali at the club you’ll think ‘This guy has taken more wickets at the club than anyone else on record’ or perhaps it will give a little more incentive for Sarfraz Ahmed who is currently 9 wickets away from breaking the First XI ‘most wickets in a season’ record. You know positive stuff!!!
