Terry Smith 1948 - 2018

On 6th November at Harlow Crematorium we said a fond farewell to Terry Smith, a past member of our club through the 1980's.

Terry, a very competent slow right arm bowler and RH bat, played frequently with our 1st & 2nd Xl's and also made an important contribution during the renaissance of our Sunday cricket during the same period where the club was able to produce 1st & 2nd XI teams as well as an occasional VETS XI

Those who played with Terry, will recall him opening the bowling on many occasions with either Bob Waller or Cliff Clark a trio of lightening quick pacemen racking up many wickets with his accurate 'off spin' bowling! They were terrific summer afternoons.

He was a likeable character, keen to be involved in all aspects of the club and happy to organise many social events which frequently 'broke even on cost'....

It was a sad day when, for reasons we never really understood, he decided to leave Marigolds and join our arch rivals, Stort CC where he played for a few more seasons and also help run their Sunday morning football team.

He remained, albeit from a distance, friends with a number of his former teammates and made a singular welcome visit during the summer of 2016 for a few beers and the odd cigarette. It was obvious to us who sat with Terry that he was not enjoying the best of health and it is a shame to learn of his passing and a great pity he was never able to pop along and have a 'few Fosters' and enjoy our new Clubhouse with us.

He left us today, with his bat alongside him and on the coffin was a mounted cricket ball with an inscription of taking eight wickets for us against Stansted CC in 1988, I remember it well..

RIP Terry
