Captains Reports 2017 Season

1st XI
The season started with comprehensive wins against Broxbourne and a home fixture with Orsett. We were then knocked out of the cup by Buckhurst Hill, followed by a home defeat to Wickford. Not the perfect start, however I used the games to try a few options. Some worked but others proved costly.
Our League season started away to Woodford Wells, I got the team back to full strength and fired up for the league. Losing the toss we was put into bat by the opposition two weeks running. We were too strong for Woodford and Orsett and had both sides 9 wickets down, but unable to take the crucial 10th and took 12 points from both games instead of 25.
Our first win came against Belhus, Who I put into bat on a road on a hot day, even though some of the team did not agree with the decision. I was tired not getting the points we deserved from the previous games and we bowled out Belhus for 197. In reply with did not lose a wicket and picked up 20 points.
We drew our next two to Harold Hill and Buckhurst Hill running out of overs, these games could have gone either way. We then edged a win over Gidea Park and Romford in a close game, but a closer finish came the following week where we lost on the very last ball to Billericay. We bounced back the following week beating Hadleigh away. Both these sides went onto promotion to the Premier League.

Our season changed when we played bottom side South Woodford halfway through the season. We were 2nd in the table and looking strong. In the match we had no answer to Essex Professional Nick Browne fresh on the back of a double century for Essex who was given two reprieve by the umpires and helped them win the game. We never really recovered from this lose for whatever reason.
With suddenly a low moral and due to inconsistent team availability for various reasons we went onto a losing streak not picking up a single win for rest of the season, the only result of note was a draw with Gidea Park and Romford.
We fell from 2nd to finish bottom. I do not feel we deserved to go down after how we started the season, however with the lack of depth in the club this was exposed this season.

We as a club need to gel together next season if we are to rebuild.
Special thanks to all who supported the 1st team, Cliff Clark and Bill Sorensen in particular, and Libby Riddell and Jake Messenger for assisting in scoring this year.
