Surprise arrival at the club

Alan Howick
- Alan Howick

Out of the blue on Wednesday at the cricket club, whilst we we’re hosting the Spain. v. Norway ICC U19 Cup match, I (Alan Howick) felt a tap on my shoulder and its Kenneth (Ken) Hills who just happened to drive by and thought he would call in whilst en-route from his Mum and Dad (Derrick & Eleanor) who now live in Braintree and to visit his brother Robert who lives somewhere west of here.

Nothing so special I suppose other than its Ken first visit in twenty years as he now lives in Boston, Mass. USA!

He had a good look around with his son Alex, spotted a team picture with him in which made his day and Alex as well. And of course his name is on the list of past Hon Secretaries.

The Hills family have contributed a lot to our club since Ken’s father Derrick first arrived in the early 1970’s. Ken along with his brother were one of the originals when the club first set up a colts section.

Also of course, Derrick has held many committee positions and is a Past President. His greatest moment and contribution for our club was negotiating the acquisition of Spicers Field with the Trustees.

Closing note, what is it about our past members who move across the pond – as soon as I mentioned a Vice President donation to both Ken and also to Graham Aspinall who visited us earlier this summer, they clear off PDQ without even

buying me a beer………….
